Scope & content
Series consists of drawings of a proposed Jail for Toronto prepared by William Thomas & Sons, Architects. There are three sets of drawings. The initial set of 28 drawings are dated November 6, 1857, and consist of elevations, floor plans, sections and details. The two subsequent sets, one of eight drawings from July and October, 1858, and one of two drawings from February 1, 1859, consist of details. The 1858 set of details bears the signatures of a number of contractors who were to work on the project. Together, these three sets of drawings represent the proposed Jail for Toronto as designed by Thomas and approved by City Council. Provincial prison inpectors, however, did not approve this set of drawings. Thomas redesigned the building and it was this latter proposal that was eventually realized as the Don Jail, opening in 1864.
