Scope & content
Series consists of photographs that were created and maintained by the Real Estate Division and its predecessor departments between 1908 and 1972. The photographs were used by the Real Estate Division to support its role in appraising, acquiring and selling real property on behalf of the City of Toronto. Most photographs in this series document properties that were identified for expropriation in order to accommodate a variety of municipal housing, transit, and works projects. In particular, this series contains 413 photographs showing houses, stores, factories and other buildings in the Moss Park neighbourhood prior to their demolition in 1959-1961 to make way for the Moss Park Apartments. Also included are photographs of expropriated properties used for Regent Park North, Civic Square, the Yonge Subway Line, Greenwood Yard, and many other projects. Series also contains an assortment of 23 aerial photographs of downtown Toronto and the waterfront taken in the 1960s, as well as miscellaneous civic events from the same time period.
