- Scope & content
- Series consists of 1,041 digital photographs taken by William Conway of Progress Photography that document the Automotive Building renovation into the Allstream Centre at Exhibition Place in 2008 and 2009. The CNE Board of Governors and City Council approved a $47 million renovation plan in 2004 to upgrade the Automotive Building into a standalone conference centre. Originally constructed in 1929, the building retained its heritage exterior but was completely renovated inside to provide a 160,000 sq. ft. conference facility with 20 meeting rooms and a 44,260 sq. ft. ballroom, the largest in Toronto. To allow for a fully open-concept floor space, renovations required major structural changes throughout the building that included the removal of columns and the roof. William Conway was hired by Vanbots Construction Corporation to provide photography services to document the progress of the renovation project, about once every month, from its beginning to end. Series includes 221 photographs showing interior and exterior views of the Automotive Building in January-April 2008, prior to its renovation, including the ground-breaking ceremony held April 23, 2008. Series includes 777 progress photographs showing the renovation work and architectural details that were taken at monthly intervals by Conway from June 2008 to October 2009, when the project was completed. Series also includes 43 photographs showing the official opening of the Allstream Centre on October 22, 2009 and a tour held on October 25, 2009. Series is arranged chronologically into sets of files representing each photography shoot.
