Scope & content
Fonds consists of 9,939 digital photographs taken by William Conway of Progress Photography that documents the construction and renovation work for three large-scale construction projects in Toronto between 2008 and 2021: the Automotive Building renovation into the Allstream Centre (2008-2009); the Dufferin Jog Elimination Project (2009-2010); and the Union Station Revitalization Project (2010-2021). Conway was hired by construction firms Vanbots Construction and Dufferin Construction to provide ongoing photography services throughout the life of their work on these City of Toronto projects. Photographs were usually taken by Conway on a monthly basis, from the beginning to end of the project. Photographs show details of the construction site, building materials, interior and exterior architecture, workers, and the progress of the project over time. There are 1,041 photographs showing the Automotive Building renovation and 8,840 photographs of the Union Station Revitalization Project, two significant City of Toronto projects that involved major structural changes to each site. Work at the Automotive Building involved the removal of columns throughout the building to accommodate a fully open-concept floor space that would facilitate its use as an event venue. For the Union Station Revitalization Project, its foundation was excavated to allow for the construction of a new train platform and to add multiple retail concourses. This involved the replacement of over 400 concrete columns, including 185 that were structurally integral to the original platform. There is also a small set of 50 photographs documenting the Dufferin Jog Elimination Project, showing stages of construction for a new underpass to join Dufferin Street beneath the CN/Go Transit rail line at Queen Street West. Fonds also includes a series of eight photographs that show the aftermath of the Queen Street West fire in February 2008 where buildings on the south-side of Queen Street West, between Bathurst and Portland Streets, were destroyed.
