- Interpretation panel at 5201-5217, boulevard Saint-Laurent, from the series « La Main, toujours de son temps – Mile End / The Main, Forever in Tune – Mile End » installed by Les Amis du boulevard Saint-Laurent in 2011. Lafond. The edifice at the northeast corner of Saint-Laurent Boulevard and Fairmount Avenue was erected in 1895-96. It was a speculative project for its owners, Blouin, Girard & Collard, Plumbers, Tinsmiths and Roofers , who participated in its construction. Occupying three former lots, the building housed stores on the ground floor and apartments on the upper two storeys. The feature that distinguishes 5201-5217 Saint-Laurent is its extraordinary ornamental metal cornice , no doubt crafted by its owners to show the full potential of the tinsmithing trade on the eve of the 20 th century. But the masonry work is also impressive. The limestone pilasters at the ground floor level are topped by capitals with simple motifs . The rough-hewn stone cladding of the upper levels is pierced by windows of vertical proportion with bush-hammered surrounds. The stone cladding turns the rounded corner of the building, which was once surmounted by a tower . The secondary façade on Fairmount Avenue is clad in red brick. The property was sold in 1896 to accountant G.H. Townsend, who remained the owner until 1911. His commercial tenants included J.P. Lanoix Dry Goods and épicerie J.E. Lafond. A succession of merchants and agents owned the property between 1911 and 1981, except during the 1930s, when the Crédit foncier Franco-Canadien took over the ownership. Among the local businesses that occupied the corner were Benny’s Store, which became Benny’s Meat Market, and the Family Barber Shop, which became the Family Shoe Repair Shop. Since the 1980s, most of the ground floor occupants have been restaurants and bars.
