Scope & content
Interpretation panel at 5130-5134, boulevard Saint-Laurent, from the series « La Main, toujours de son temps – Mile End / The Main, Forever in Tune – Mile End » installed by Les Amis du boulevard Saint-Laurent in 2011. Erected in the mid-1980s, 5130-5134 Saint-Laurent stands apart from many of its older neighbours on the Main because of its curved corner and its lateral courtyard, not to mention its post-modern architectural expression. Nevertheless, this four-storey building, clad in red brick and concrete, integrates well with the diverse urban landscape of this sector of the street and contributes to its liveliness, especially in summertime. The existing building replaced an edifice that was almost identical to its neighbour to the south . The three-storey brick-clad ensemble , constructed before 1895, was topped by a false-mansard and towers, and embellished with decorative wood balconies and dormers. From 1904 until around 1930, the north edifice belonged to the Gagnon family, first François Gagnon and then electrician Siméon Gagnon. On the ground floor, the latter operated the Saint-Louis Auto Garage and a showroom for fashionable Cutter and Rambler cars . Upstairs were apartments. In 1924-25, a police investigation on prostitution in Montreal revealed that one of them was used as a brothel, even though Police Station N o 20 was only a few yards to the south! In the early 1930s, the ground floor was used by Diamond Taxicab Association Ltd. , and from 1935 until 1972, Paul Léger ran the Léger Garage there. After a period of being vacant in the early 1980s, the property was sold and the old building was replaced by the current one, which houses lofts on the upper floors. The Italian restaurant La Cucina has occupied the ground floor for over 25 years. 5 ca1913 3 ca1913 2 ca1930
