- Interpretation panel at 5800-5804, boulevard Saint-Laurent, from the series « La Main, toujours de son temps – Mile End / The Main, Forever in Tune – Mile End » installed by Les Amis du boulevard Saint-Laurent in 2011. The building at the northwest corner of Saint-Laurent Boulevard and Bernard Street was erected in 1909, just before the annexation of the Town of Saint Louis. At the time, it was owned by the municipality’s secretary-treasurer, A.F. Vincent. His tenant was Pratte Pianos, a family business founded in 1875. Specializing in upright and player pianos , the company had clients from all over Montreal and across the country. Its new home was therefore ideally situated: on a major commercial artery with streetcar service, and opposite the Mile End Station, a stop on the Canadian Pacific Railway’s cross-Canada line . Simple and functional, the red brick edifice was custom-designed to respond to the needs of Pratte Pianos . The offices and showroom, with display windows facing the Main, occupied the ground floor. The upper levels, which offered good natural light and ventilation thanks to several windows, housed spaces for manufacturing, assemblage and repairs. Following the departure of Pratte Pianos in 1922, the ground floor housed a succession of businesses, including the Mile End Station Pharmacy and Maurice Sandwich Shop, and factories occupied the upper levels. Around 1943, the property was purchased by Handbags Ltd., which made purses and bags there until 1960, when Murray Sales Company became owner and rented space to other factories. Whisky Café has occupied the ground floor since 1989. In 1990, the film production company Cité Amérique bought the property and established its offices on the upper floors. When the building’s masonrywork was refurbished in 2008, the original details were reproduced. 5 ca1913
