- Scope & content
- Series consists of a selection of building permit application plans, submitted in accordance with the City's buildings by-law. In its various incarnations over the years, the by-law determined the kinds of plans to be submitted (e.g.,architectural, structural and mechanical plans; block plans, plans of survey). The by-law also determined at what point plans were submitted (e.g., plans of the proposed work, filed prior to permit issuance, or 'as built' plans, filed upon completion of the work). Finally, from time to time, it determined whether copies of plans were to be retained by the City, and, if so, for how long.Historically, the City of Toronto consistently requested plans of proposed work rather than 'as built' plans. Permit application plans were used initially to determine whether or not an application adhered to existing provincial and municipal building regulations. The plans were also made available for inspection to any outside party interested in a proposed work. Once a project was completed, the plans were used to ensure compliance with building regulations.Because of the way the City has historically administered its building permit application records, building plans were retained for most permits issued from 1923 to the present, along with selected plans from permits issued from 1903 to 1923. It is from this group of retained plans that the records in this series have been selected.
