Scope & content
Fonds consists of photographs taken in Toronto by professional photographer Eric Trussler while he was employed by Canada Pictures Ltd. and Ken Bell Photography. Fonds also consists of photographs taken between 1957 and 1974, when Trussler was operating his own business, Eric Trussler Photography. For many years of his career, Trussler's major client was the Toronto Transit Commission. His association with the TTC began while he was still with Canada Pictures Ltd. and continued through his time as an independent photographer. Trussler's work provides a detailed and highly professional record of the development of the original Yonge Street subway line, the further extensions to the subway system, and operations at the TTC generally. Fonds consists of three series, which are based on the creator's filing system. Series 1379 consists of 129 images, taken for the Toronto Transit Commission between 1954 and 1969; Series 648 consists of about 2,400 images taken for the TTC between 1957 and 1970; and Series 577 consists of 132 images produced for the TTC and others between 1949 and 1974. Although grouped into three different series, the dates and subject matter of the photographs overlap. For example, the earliest images of the construction of the Yonge Street Subway line were taken in 1949 and are located in Series 577, but many other images of the construction of Toronto's first subway line are found in Series 1379. While the TTC is the major client represented in these series, some images seem to have been taken for other, unspecified reasons. Many of these images can be found in Series 577. For example, there is a 1950s view of the Confederation Life Building, a 1966 aerial view of York University, and 1960s-era views of the so-called "Bayview Ghost" on Bayview Avenue overlooking the Don Valley.
