Scope & content
Fonds consists of administrative, legislative, financial, and photographic records documenting the operation of the City of North York and its predecessor municipalities, the Township of North York and the Borough of North York. A substantial part of the fonds consists of records documenting the debates and decisions of Council, such as Council minutes and by-laws. Included are minutes and reports of the Board of Control, and reports of its successor the Executive Committee, as well as minutes and reports of other standing and special committees of Council. In addition, fonds includes communications and related materials (departmental reports, tenders, plans, etc.) written to Council and committees regarding municipal issues. These records cover a wide range of municipal functions, including urban planning, industrial development, transportation, police, fire prevention, public works, social services, parks, and recreation. Records in the fonds that reveal the financial functioning of the municipality include tax assessment records, which provide property details as well as tax information. Fonds also includes voters' lists and other records relating to elections, including election results, maps showing ward changes, photographs of candidates, etc. Lastly, fonds includes photographs documenting North York people, places and events, including municipal buildings, homes and neighbourhoods, factories and commercial areas, parks and open spaces, civic officials, elected representatives, and happenings.
