Scope & content
Series consists of a collection of fire insurance maps or plans created by Charles Goad and his sons. These are sometimes referred to as Goad's Fire Insurance Plans. They were prepared primarily for fire insurance underwriters, showing construction materials and other information about structures in a given area. Most of the plates in these volumes will include the names of larger buildings and property owners. This type of information is more prevalent in the earlier years. The majority of these listings are on the maps for the downtown core of Toronto. The fire insurance plans provide an evolving documentation of the City of Toronto and vicinity over several years. Working from the maps prepared for a base year, such as 1910, it was the responsibility of the owner of the volume to add (glue in) the Goad's-issued updates to the maps. The revised map would be referred to as 1910, revised to October 1913, for example. As there were many revisions, there can be variance between volumes that, at first glance, would appear to be from the same year. Updates usually reflect changes in the built environment, changes in ownership, or sometimes changes in topography. Furthermore, some of the maps include unique manuscript annotations made by the volume owner, where, for example, street names were crossed out and new ones added, or the locations of watermains and sewers were indicated.
