Scope & content
Fonds consists of about 500 photographic images taken between about 1894 and 1950, which document prominent businessmen, politicians, and royalty, as well as a wide variety of physical and social settings. Among these are: commercial and public buildings, schools, churches, hotels, private residences, monuments, historic sites, cemeteries, parks, political events, parades, banquets, garden parties, fox hunts, carriages and automobiles. The fonds also provides a record of some of Southern Ontario's highways, road construction, farms, and agricultural activities. Highlights include photographs of the opening ceremonies of Toronto City Hall (1899), Ontario Legislature Buildings at Queen's Park, Government House at Chorley Park, Upper Canada College, University of Toronto, St. Michael's Cathedral, St. James Cathedral, Metropolitan Church, Trinity Church, Carlton Street Methodist Church, Casa Loma, Royal Canadian Yacht Club, Bank of Montreal at Yonge and Front streets, Lord and Lady Minto, Lord and Lady Gray, Sir John Eaton, Toronto Hunt Club, Toronto Canoe Club, the Toronto Fire of 1904, the Canadian National Exhibition, and the construction of Lakeshore Road. Also of particular interest are the many photographs taken north of the City proper. These images show sections of Yonge Street in and around such centres as Aurora, Thornhill, Newmarket, Langstaff, and Newtonbrook, where Galbraith lived after 1915.
