- Scope & content
- The Audrey Schirmer fonds documents Audrey Schirmer’s photographic works from 1970 to 1981. The fonds provides photographic evidence of the United States’ socio-political climate during the 1970s, with particular emphasis on anti-Vietnam war protests occurring across the country. During this time, Schirmer photographed candlelight processions, war rallies, anti-war demonstrations, political protests, and marches to the United States Capitol. The fonds includes photographs of Vietnam veterans throwing away their medals on the steps of the U.S Congress building in Washington; the veterans anti-war centre at the Fort Hood army base; activists Bella Abzug, Johnnie Tillmon, Dan Berrigan, and Senator George McGovern, among others; and images of Erica Huggins and Jane Fonda at the Candlelight Vigil of April 22nd, 1971, in Washington, D.C. The fonds also contains Schirmer’s photographs of the occupation of the First Spanish Methodist Church by the Puerto Ricans Young Lords in East Harlem in 1970. In addition, the fonds contains images of Schirmer’s photographic work documenting the lives of immigrant children and children with disabilities, which were later displayed at the Young Immigrants exhibition. The photographs of immigrant children were mostly captured in the streets of Montreal during the late 1970s an early 1980s. The fonds also contains photographs Schirmer took during the meeting between the Canadian Voice of Women and women from North Vietnam in Toronto in April 1971. The Audrey Schirmer fonds mostly contains photographic materials, including prints, negatives, and contact sheets. The fonds also includes textual records and other graphic materials, including a newspaper clipping, a poster, and a handmade book with photographs of young immigrants in Montreal.
