CORPORATION OFSpanish and Portuguese Jews"SHEARITH ISRAEL"Founded in 1768IF ANY REPLY TO THIS LETTER ADDRESS TOP. B. HART, HON. SEC.1449 ST. ALEXANDER STREET, MONTREAL.TELEPHONE: LANCASTER 0944SYNAGOGUE CHAMBERS1443 STANLEY STREETMONTREAL, June 15th, 1933.To the Members of the Spanish & Portuguese Congregation,NOTICE OF SPECIAL GENERAL MEETING.By Order Of The Board Of Trustees.TELEPHONE: LANCASTER 0644DO YOU FULLY REALIZE THE SERIOUS POSITION OF YOUR SYNAGOGUE?We state YOUR Synagogue in the fullest sense of the word, because your Board of Trustees are frankly very much worried about the attitude of members at large. The situation has now come to an impasse. Your Board is unable to carry on under the conditions which exist and unless YOU are prepared to come forward and take some interest, then the only alternative will be to close the Synagogue and conserve whatever assets we have left.Closing the Synagogue will mean the dismissal of your Ministers and your other employees, and the Board wishes to go on record that if they are forced to do this, THE ONUS OF RESPONSIBILITY IS ENTIRELY ON THOSE MEMBERS WHO OWE US MONEY AND WILL NOT PAY UP AND WHO HAVE BY THEIR APATHY AND LACK OF INTEREST BROUGHT ABOUT THIS DISASTROUS SITUATION IN YOUR CONGREGATION.The handful of members of this Congregation who always pay their dues on time and who contribute liberally in extra amounts whenever called upon are unable to carry the burden for YOU any longer, the Board will not run the Congregation into any further debt and furthermore refuse to operate a Congregation in which you exhibit such a lack of interest.Matters indeed are so serious that the Board is calling a Special General Meeting of the Congregation for Wednesday Evening, July 5th 1933, in the Synagogue Chambers at 8.30 p.m. THIS IS YOUR NOTICE OF THAT MEETING IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE BY-LAWS.And if you do not make it your personal business to come to this meeting and bring along with you a cheque (if you are in arrears) for whatever you may owe for dues or other pledges and be prepared to back up the Board, then at least we shall know that you personally do not care whether the Synagogue closes or otherwise. At this Meeting the fullest information will be available for you. But this meeting will be the last opportunity you will have of preventing YOUR Congregation from closing our Synagogue. And if it should become necessary to close, then in that event all members are still liable for their debts or unpaid pledges and will be called upon to pay same immediately.Read automatically; may contain mistakes.
