- Montreal, February 6th, 1908.Rabbi H. AbramowitzDear Sir:--We are, Dear Sir,Yours fraternally,M. Workman Chairman.Secretary.P.S.--The first congregation to join the above outlined movement is the Temple Emanu-El, Montreal.Address: M. Workman, Chairman, 1688 Notre Dame Street, Montreal.Montreal, February 6th, 1906.1888 Notre Dame Street, Montreal.Impressed with the conviction that the time is opportune for the Jewish Congregations of Canada to unite for the more effective discharge of the obligations which the sublime principles of their religion call for, a number of gentlemen connected with the Temple Emanu-El, have met and constituted themselves a committee for the purpose of organizing a "UNION OF CANADIAN JEWISH CONGREGATIONS."The proposed objects of this union are to be:-1. To bring the existing Congregations in Canada into closer touch and harmony, and to permit of concerted action in matters affecting the welfare of Judaism.2. To assist in the establishment of Congregations and religious institutions in communities, where their need is apparent.3. To promote religious instruction and encourage the study of the Scriptures and tenets and history of Judaism.4. To preclude the possibility of the younger generation, upon whom the future of Judaism perforce depends, being alienated from the faith of their fathers.5. To provide means for the relief of Jews from any possible oppression or unjust discrimination, and to stimulate their intellectual elevation. All this, however, without interfering with the mode of worship, the schools, or any other of the existing congregational institutions. With this end in view we beg to enlist the sympathy of your congregation, and to extend to it a cordial invitation to join in the movement, and to be represented at a meeting to be held at a date to be agreed upon by the congregations interested, when a permanent organization will be perfected.Should your congregation, before arriving at a decision, desire to have the matter more fully explained, we shall be pleased to have a representative of the movement arrange to visit and address you on the subject.Awaiting your response in due course,Read automatically; may contain mistakes.
