Scope & content
Interpretation panel at 4848, boulevard Saint-Laurent, from the series « La Main, toujours de son temps – Mile End / The Main, Forever in Tune – Mile End » installed by Les Amis du boulevard Saint-Laurent in 2011. The National Coal and Grain Company, owned by merchant Benjamin Vipond, occupied this site in the early 20 th century. The existing building was constructed in 1935-36 for the Workmen’s Circle, an organization founded around 1900 in the United States to defend the rights of Jewish workers. Its first Montreal branch was established in 1907. 4848 Saint-Laurent, a popular venue for young Jews, was the home of the Young Circle League . It housed a meeting hall, an assembly room and a gymnasium. The building’s art-deco-inspired architecture distinguishes it from its neighbours. Its architect, Maxwell M. Kalman , was one of the first Jewish graduates of McGill University’s School of Architecture. After the Workmen’s Circle moved in the early 1960s, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal rented the building for its offices and rehearsal space . In 1973, the property was purchased by the Centre Espagnol Social de Montréal and became a Spanish community centre. Today, its Spanish restaurant, Sala Rosa, and its performance hall, Sala Rossa, host a rich repertory of cultural and social activities that attract Montrealers of all cultural origins . C 1936
